The Fix Starts with You

Prepared by the AHC family and based on the Khutbah by Dr. Ali Albargouthi: Imam Malik's formula for reform, why the Quran and the Sunnah must stay together, and how one person's daily return to the Book of Allah reaches a family, a masjid and the whole Ummah.

The Fix Starts with You: Reviving the Ummah Through the Quran and Sunnah

Whether a person struggles with inner dissatisfaction, a family is going through turbulence, a community is divided and distracted, or the whole Ummah is searching for a way out of crisis, the remedy is the same. This article follows a lecture by Dr. Ali Albargouthi, and the answer he gives is older than every one of those problems.

In short

Imam Malik said the last of this Ummah will be fixed only by what fixed its first part. That means a living relationship with the Quran, the Sunnah beside it, pure Tawheed, and the patience to be a stranger. And it starts with you.

Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, put the remedy into one sentence.

The last of this Ummah will not be fixed and reformed except by that which fixed and reformed the first part.
— Imam Malik

What changed the earliest generation of Muslims was not a vague philosophical theory. It was a practical, proven path. If our society feels lost, the blueprint of that first generation shows the exact steps to reproduce their success.

The defining mark of the Sahabah was their relationship with the Quran. They did not treat it as a relic. They went to its pages looking for answers, to the smallest worries of life and to its biggest questions. Ask people for guidance and you meet contradictions. Turn to social media and you meet noise. Turn to the secular philosophies and you meet untested theories. Turn to the Book of Allah and you meet clarity.

Qur’an

So hold fast to what has been revealed to you. Indeed, you are on a straight path. And indeed, it is a reminder for you and for your people, and you will be questioned.

Surah az-Zukhruf (43:43 to 43:44)

The Quran is the constant reminder that anchors a believer when the mind wanders or the heart grows neglectful. Hold to it and individuals and societies rise. Neglect it and humiliation follows, in this world and the next.

Hadith

Indeed, Allah elevates some people by this Book and lowers others.

'Umar ibn al-Khattab

Sahih Muslim

There is a quiet danger for later generations: inheriting the Quran without having fought or sacrificed for it. Children who inherit wealth without seeing their parents' labour often squander it. In the same way, those who inherit faith casually risk trading away their duties to Allah for a little worldly gain.

Qur’an

Then they were succeeded by other generations who inherited the Scripture. They indulged in unlawful gains, claiming, “We will be forgiven ˹after all˺.” And if similar gain came their way, they would seize it. Was a covenant not taken from them in the Scripture that they would not say anything about Allah except the truth? And they were already well-versed in its teachings. But the ˹eternal˺ Home of the Hereafter is far better for those mindful ˹of Allah˺. Will you not then understand? As for those who firmly abide by the Scripture and establish prayer—surely We never discount the reward of those acting righteously.

Surah al-A'raf (7:169 to 7:170)

The Quran is guidance for the confused and healing for the diseases of the heart. And Allah tells the believers to hold to His revelation together.

Qur’an

And hold firmly together to the rope of Allah, and do not become divided.

Surah Aal 'Imran (3:103), first part of the verse

Hadith

The Book of Allah is a rope extended from the sky to the earth.

Zayd ibn Arqam

Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3788

Protection

Holding tightly to this divine link gives protection ('isma) from division within and from hardship without.

True adherence to the Quran means full obedience to the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ. Allah says:

Qur’an

Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it, and whatever he forbids you, abstain from it.

Surah al-Hashr (59:7)

When disagreement and division multiply, the Prophet ﷺ gave clear instructions.

Hadith

Whoever of you lives after me will see much disagreement. So hold to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs. Bite onto it with your molar teeth, and beware of newly invented matters.

Al-'Irbad ibn Sariyah

Sunan Abi Dawud 4607

  • The Book of Allah, read and lived every day
  • The Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ
  • The way of the rightly guided caliphs
  • And to stay away from newly invented matters

Living by the truth in a culture ruled by desire can feel lonely. But that loneliness is not a sign that you are doing something wrong. The Prophet ﷺ told us it would happen, and he called it a mark of honour.

Real revival is not a distant, abstract goal. It begins within you, and that is why the lecture is titled the way it is: the fix starts with you.

Hadith

Islam began as something strange, and it will return to being strange as it began, so glad tidings to the strangers.

Abu Hurayrah

Sahih Muslim 145

Think about what that looks like in practice. A person commits to opening the Quran every day and looking for answers in it. That is a small act, but it does not stay small. The change shows in how they treat their children and their spouse. It reaches their neighbours. It reaches their local masjid. And in the end it reaches the wider Ummah.

So the question this lecture leaves us with is not what the Ummah should do. It is what we will do today. Open the Quran. Look for your answer in it. Hold to the Sunnah beside it. Then let the people around you feel the difference.

The closing dua

O Allah, make us among those who reform themselves, their families, their communities and the Ummah of Muhammad. O Allah, make us among the strangers who hold to Your Book and the Sunnah of Your Prophet. Fill our hearts with iman and with love for You, Your Messenger and the believers. Grant us sincere repentance, and grant mercy, honour and victory to the Ummah.
